From Terrier to Setter: 7 Irish Dog Breeds

We love our pups no matter what, and rarely consider where they come from – just that they belong in our lives, of course. So to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we thought it’d be fun to see which lucky breeds boast Irish heritage (hint: it turns out that, more often than not, it’s all in the name). Read on to see if your dog’s one of them!

  • Irish Terrier. See what we mean about the name? Speculated to be the first terrier breed, this canine has all the classic terrier traits: adaptability, loyalty, and a healthy dose of spirit.
  • Irish Setter. Aside from having a silky coat and cheerful disposition, this breed is fantastic at hunting.
  • Irish Wolfhound. This is a big one! And we mean that literally – the Irish Wolfhound can weigh up to 180 pounds and a female is at least 30 inches tall. Truly a gentle giant, this dog is calm, noble, and perfect for a family (with lots of space, that is).
  • Irish Water Spaniel. This breed is as old as it is rare, and makes an excellent pet. Who doesn’t love a spunky, fun-loving, extra-fluffy pup?
  • Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. One of the few Irish pups whose name isn’t an instant giveaway, this affectionate pup’s curious nature goes hand in hand with its athleticism.
  • Kerry Blue Terrier. A particularly active breed, there will be no dull moments with this pup in your life. If you’re looking for an adventure buddy, look no further!
  • Glen of Imaal Terrier. Weighing in at about 35 pounds, this little guy is agile, loyal, active and gentle.

Did we miss your dog breed? We’d love to hear about her (or him) – give us the lowdown in the comments below!
